Sale by Gwen Pharis Ringwood
With spring at hand and the city coming alive with excitement,
Budapest's festival season has begun. In-synch with this the
Canadians in the city have decided to take part in the celebrations.
The Canadian Cultural Spring Festival is bringing a number
of events and activities to share with the population of Budapest.
The Garage Sale is one of the centerpieces this year. Successfully
produced and adapted in university theatres, Garage Sale is
an exciting journey to Canada but also a tender story of love,
age, and relationships. A story of an aged couple spending
their Saturday morning watching the animation surrounding a
neighbor's garage sale, the play displays the trials and tribulations
of Rachel and Reuben's life together.
For Rachel and Reuben, it is an exciting day as they sit on
the back of their porch and watch a young couple have a garage
sale. Soon they realize that their neighbors' sale marks the
end of their relationship. The old couple later gets very upset
seeing a baby placed in a laundry basket to which a price is
attached. They wonder, "What will happen to the baby?" Soon,
Rachel and Reuben realize that their marriage has gone through
many crises, while taking a glance at the dreams and wishes
of their past...
The author of the play, Gwen Pharis Ringwood (1910-1984) was
educated in and spent most of her life in Alberta, Canada.
Apart from occasional short stories, she wrote more than sixty
plays- dramas, musicals, and children's plays. Ringwood successfully
experimented with many themes and utilized various stage techniques.
Directed by Aleksandra Bosnjak, a Canadian intern currently
posted in Budapest, and features a multitude of university
students and semi-professionals. This pleasant use of amateurs,
instead of professional actors and stagehands allows this Canadian
comedy to promise a very lively and true to heart performance.
